New article on medium (excerpt):
In some ways, even without performing internal calculations, we may still define equations for the internal parameter dynamics, and provide a neuron-specific response strength or transfer function at each point in time to select and match synaptic inputs — a move away from purely use-dependent plasticity to vector field-coordinated plasticity to provide suitable abstract representations for patterned input. How this plays out to support fine-tuned motor coordination — one of the functions of the cerebellum, and an important component in syntactic function, even for imagined speech – is still not fully understood. The hypothesis is that such a two-layer dynamical systems approach is better suited to explain and model hierarchical sentence planning and syntactic construction than other potential cortex-cerebellar systems theories.
