In September, at a meeting in Paris, we raised an important question: How is the neural code kept stable in the presence of neuromodulatory signals? When dopamine, serotonin, or other neuromodulators are released, they alter the properties of neural networks. Yet core cognitive functions can remain remarkably stable despite these changes. How, then, does the brain preserve a stable neural code while its underlying network dynamics are continually modulated?
